(IND) 7 statistics that show Philadelphia is a rising economic powerhouse

Philadelphia is a city on the rise if you examine stats from a new Pew Charitable Trusts report. Building permits are at their highest levels in a decade. Population is up. Homicides are down.

Here are seven statistics to chew on:

2,815:   The number of new residential units developers have received permits for. It's the highest number in a decade.

$465 million: The estimated worth of those newly developed units, the highest annual amount on record.

13,414: Sales of residential units in Philadelphia, up 13.3 percent from 2011.

1,553,165: Philadelphia's population. It's up for the seventh straight year. The population was 1.49 million in 2003.

247: Homicides in Philadelphia. While still far too high, it's down 34 percent from 2012.

666,100: The number of jobs in Philadelphia, up 2 percent from 2009.

26,662: Philadelphia city employees, up 0.9 percent since 2010.
