The new Pennsylvania transportation plan will bring $345
million in liquid fuel payments to municipalities, an 8 percent, or $25.1
million, increase over last year.
The money will be distributed March 3 to help municipalities
maintain their roads and bridges and for snow removal.
Among the Greater Lehigh Valley area allocations:
• Reading will receive $1.57 million, an increase of
$109,470.
• Allentown will receive $2.28 million, an increase of
$196,586.
• Bethlehem will receive $1.5 million, an increase of
$105,289.
• Easton will receive $501,946, an increase of $40,998.
The formula for payments is based on a municipality's
population and miles of locally-owned roads.
To be counted as eligible for liquid fuels, a road must be
formally adopted as a public street by the municipality, meet certain dimension
requirements and be able to safely accommodate vehicles driving at least 15
mph.
Under Act 89, the new transportation plan Corbett signed in
November, liquid fuels reimbursements will increase by roughly $220 million
over the next five years.
