Post Brothers' maintenance workers who removed union protest
signs installed in public areas near Post Brothers apartment complexes in
Germantown and on City Avenue violated union rights, a National Labor Relations
Board administrative judge has ruled.
Installed by the International Brotherhood of Electrical
Workers Local 98, the signs urged passersby not to rent the apartments, saying
Post Commercial Real Estate L.L.C. was undercutting area union wage standards.
The company said it wasn't at fault, because its
subcontractors set wages. Post argued that Local 98 had mounted an improper
boycott, saying the signs had nothing to do with the apartment complexes, but
stemmed from construction disagreements at the controversial Goldtex apartment
project in Center City.
Even if that were the case, the judge ruled Jan. 17, the
facts included in the filings didn't support it. Post was ordered not to remove
signs and to remind employees of their union rights. -
