New Comcast tower getting concourse extension but little new retail
When Liberty Property Trust constructs the new skyscraper for Comcast Corp., it will invest $40 million in city and state funds it receives to extend the underground subway concourse to 18th and Arch streets.
That will allow those hopping off regional rail or the subway a subterranean connection to the new Comcast Center for Technology and Innovation and Four Seasons hotel that will be part of the project. Road, sidewalk and other improvements to public spaces will also be made, according to a company spokeswoman.
When Liberty constructed Comcast’s headquarters at 17th Street and John F. Kennedy Boulevard, it also extended the concourse to connect with the office tower and at the same time, creating 45,000 square feet of new underground retail space called the Market and Shops at Comcast Center. With that space, Liberty decided to make it an amenity for the building’s office tenants and its feel is more Rockefeller Center than Market East. This time around, the developer won’t be creating any new underground retail space and, preliminarily, just about 2,800 square feet of new retail space will be on the street level.
