CHOP gets Giant gift for outpatient-care center

Giant Food Stores is providing Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia with a $5 million gift for its Buerger Center for Advanced Pediatric Care, an outpatient facility in University City scheduled to open in 2015.
CHOP will name the entrance area in the Buerger Center the "Giant Lobby," in recognition of 20 years of philanthropic support — totaling $13.5 million — that the grocery store chain has provided to the West Philadelphia pediatric hospital.

Hospital officials said the 9,000-square-foot Giant Lobby is being designed as the focal point for family arrivals at the center, and will feature a reception area providing information, directions and assistance to families. It will offer views onto a landscaped plaza, with a two-story, glass-walled ramp winding overhead to the second floor.

More details about the gift are expected to be announced at a media event Friday morning.

The Buerger Center for Advanced Pediatric Care will feature 12 floors of integrated clinical-care facilities and a variety of patient, family and visitor amenities.

Giant Food Stores of Carlisle, Pa., operates 200 grocery stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia.
