Veterans Housing
(Redevelopment Assistance Capital Project)
|
In the near future, I will be introducing SB 1134, legislation designed to
ensure the availability of veterans housing within Pennsylvania. My
proposal will authorize projects that will create housing units for our
veterans’ population as eligible for redevelopment assistance capital project
funds. In addition to making such projects eligible for funding, my bill will
use a minimum of $20,000,000 of the current available $50,000,000 allocation
toward the construction of units specifically to house homeless veterans or
veterans in need within this Commonwealth.
On any given night, approximately 1,500 veterans within this Commonwealth are homeless. That figure does not include those veterans who are imminent danger of becoming homeless. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has initiated a campaign to end veterans’ homelessness nationwide by 2015. I believe earmarking RACP funds for veterans’ housing will help us achieve the goal of reducing, and eventually eliminating, veterans’ homelessness in Pennsylvania Please join me in cosponsoring this important piece of legislation. |
