While the closure of Robinson’s Luggage is a reminder of how
difficult it is to stay in business in the face of fierce online competition,
it has made available for the first time in nearly three decades a prime South
Broad Street retail location.
The 4,876-square-foot street-level store at Broad and Walnut
streets is being marketed to retailers and already there’s a lot of interest in
the site, said Steve Gartner of Metro Commercial Real Estate Inc., which is
marketing it.
The building is owned by the University of the Arts.
It’s not often a high-profile retail space like this comes
available.
“There are very few single-floor, 5,000-square-foot spaces
on all of Walnut Street,” Gartner said. “It's not simply on a corner, but it's
on such a prominent, visible corner.”
Robinson’s Luggage was in business for more than 80 years
and operated several locations throughout the region. The company decided to
close its last store, the one on Broad Street, by year end, according to news
reports. It had been in that Broad Street location since 1984.
Gartner has started to market the space, but with most
retailers busy with the holiday season, he plans to ramp up showing the space
beginning in January.
“We're already getting a ton of inquiries, and it will
certainly merit a strong rent number,” he said. “Few locations in Center City
can get traffic during daytime, nighttime and weekends like this corner.”
