An Allentown construction firm has put the finishing
touches on a carpenter training school in Allentown.
Alvin H. Butz Inc. completed renovations to the
Carpenters Apprentice School of Philadelphia and Vicinity. The school also has
a training facility in Philadelphia.
The new school, at 1818 Vultee St. in Allentown, was a
former Victaulic manufacturing facility, said Margaret McConnell, marketing director
for Alvin H. Butz.
The company partnered with Roberson Butz Architects of
Allentown to provide design and engineering services.
With renovations, the estimated construction cost is
nearly $5 million, said Charles Brock, director of the Carpenters Joint
Apprenticeship Committee of Philadelphia and Vicinity. Classes will start in
October, he said. Students must be members of the United Brotherhood of
Carpenters.
The Carpenters Apprentice School is led by the Carpenters
Joint Apprentice Committee, which provides training to members and contractors
associated with the Northeast Regional Council of Carpenters, according to a
news release.
The 36,756-square-foot facility is used to train
carpenters in an apprenticeship program and includes a large open-shop area for
teaching construction, along with booths for welding training.
Renovations included a new entry canopy and storefront
doors, five offices, two large classrooms, conference and team meeting rooms,
updated bathrooms and window replacement.
