NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Two rail unions negotiating with New
Jersey Transit haven't agreed to extend a "no-strike" deadline until
mid-July.
The current deadline ends next Thursday. Nine other
unions have ratified an agreement reached in March that avoided a system-wide
strike.
In an email Friday, NJ Transit said it had agreed to the
request by the National Mediation Board.
Stephen Burkert, general chairman of the conductors'
union, posted on the union's website Wednesday that he hadn't agreed to the
extension. Burkert didn't return a message Friday.
NJ Transit spokesman Nancy Snyder said in Friday's email
the agency and unions have been in contact "many times" over the last
few days.
In March, NJ Transit estimated a strike would've forced
roughly 40,000 train commuters to find other ways into New York.
