Union, 42 Pa. nursing homes beat deadline for new labor deals

SEIU Healthcare Pa. has, during the past week, negotiated new or tentative contracts for nearly 5,000 workers it represents at 42 nursing homes across Pennsylvania.

The union said the new deals provide a pathway for certified nurse assistants to earn $15 per hour and for workers in non-nursing departments such as housekeeping, laundry, and dietary to earn between $13 and $14 per hour.

The new contract were negotiated with three national operators of nursing homes: Genesis Healthcare of Kennett Square, Pa., Golden Living Centers of Plano, Texas; and Oaks Health of Florida.

Golden Living Center, which operates more than two dozen nursing homes in Pennsylvania, issued a statement saying: “We have reached a tentative agreement and will be forthcoming with more details once the agreement has been finalized. We are committed to our caregivers in Pennsylvania and strive to provide the highest care we can to our patients and residents with the resources we have available.”

The Philadelphia-area facilities that reached new deals with the SEIU are:

  • Golden Living Center in Doylestown,
  • Golden Living Center in Rosemont,
  • Somerton Center in Philadelphia,
  • Chapel Manor in Philadelphia,
  • Powerback Rehabilitation in Philadelphia,
  • Crestview Center in Langhorne,
  • Garden Spring Center in Willow Grove, and
  • Langhorne Gardens Rehab And Nursing Center in Langhorne.

SEIU said it is continuing to bargain on behalf of Pennsylvania nursing home workers at 14 facilities, none of which are in southeastern Pennsylvania, operated by the Global Health Care, Reliant Senior Care and Guardian Health Care nursing home chains. Those contracts expired at the end of March.

A spokeswoman for SEIU Healthcare Pa. said contract talks are also ongoing at another dozen nursing homes with deals that expire during the summer.
