Union claims Inquirer, Daily News management bargained in bad faith

The union representing the bulk of employees at Philadelphia Media Network have filed an unfair labor practice charge with the National Labor Relations Board and a grievance against the company, claiming it bargained in bad faith during negotiations that led to a new collective bargaining agreement between the two sides this past summer.

In a bulletin to members, Newspaper Guild Local 10 executive board members said they have learned that the company’s proposal to eliminate side agreements to the previous contract, on the claim they were no longer applicable, was false.

Specifically, the union said management was not truthful about its proposal to eliminate one side letter that obligated PMN management to make the same contributions to the Guild’s pension fund that they made to any other union. The bulletin said management failed to disclose that it had already agreed to resume contributions to the Teamsters pension plan.
