Historic review board supports six-story building in South Bethlehem

Plans for a six-story commercial building at a prominent gateway to South Bethlehem got a step closer to reality after the project was approved this week by the South Bethlehem Historic Conservation Commission.

Greenway Park, which includes an attached parking deck, would be built on a vacant lot at the corner of Third and New streets. This month, St. Luke’s University Health Network and Lehigh University announced their intention to be the anchor tenants of the 125,000-square-foot structure.

Developer Dennis Benner said he will submit the land development plan to city council for approval and hopes to begin construction in March.

St. Luke’s will have a floor of clinical, teaching and administrative space, while Lehigh University will move 140 employees in its office of advancement to the building.

Including the parking deck, the project is expected to cost more than $35 million.

CBRE Inc., which has an office in Fogelsville, is leasing space in Greenway Park.

Howard Kulp of Howard Kulp Architects in Allentown designed the project.
