Berks contractor completes three Pet Valu renovations

A design-build contractor in West Reading completed three renovations to Pet Valu locations in Pennsylvania, including one in Lower Macungie Township.

South Coast Improvement, which has a mid-Atlantic office in Berks County and corporate offices in Marion, Mass., did the renovations, which totaled $787,000. The largest project was at Pet Valu Huntington Valley, said Eric Hancock, vice president of the mid-Atlantic region for South Coast Improvement.

At Pet Valu on Millcreek Road in Lower Macungie Township, the company completed a box renovation with an interior fit, including removing a wall between the Pet Valu store and adjacent vacant store space. The company removed and cleaned all unused mechanical and electrical wiring, cut concrete for the new soil line and built a wall for a dog-wash station.

The company produced all three renovations in 12 to 13 weeks, Hancock said.

“Renovations definitely represent a larger percentage of our work than new construction projects,” he said. “A large portion of the renovation work is acute care and assisted living, and we are starting to see more activity in retail.”

At Pet Valu in Huntington Valley, the company completed a retail fit-out and exterior renovation of a strip mall built in 1955 for Kravco Co. LLC. At the Pet Valu in Palmyra, the company demolished the retail store space before the box renovation.

Earlier this year, South Coast Improvement created a retail division within its company with projects such as these in mind, said Tom Quinlan, president of South Coast Improvement, in a statement.
