York College will buy the Marketview Arts building at 37
W. Philadelphia St. by the end of the year and begin turning it into a
"central hub for students, faculty and the wider community to come
together to support the cultural renaissance of York," according to school
President Pamela Gunter-Smith.
Jack Kay, chairman of the York County Industrial
Development Authority, which owns the building, said through a spokesperson
Thursday that the organization would prefer not to reveal the building's
purchase price until the deal is completed.
The authority bought the building in 2010 and revitalized
it into Marketview Arts, an arts center intended to attract college students,
local artists and a mixed-use group of tenants who could contribute to activity
in downtown York's cultural district. The building was formerly home of the
Fraternal Order of Eagles.
Noting that York College is committed to helping
rejuvenate the city, Gunter-Smith said in a news release that the school will
use the building to give students "hands-on experience in all facets of
the arts."It will be operated through the college's Center for Community
Engagement.
Dominic DelliCarpini , dean of the center, said the
Marketview acquisition, along with the school's recent purchase of the former
Lafayette Club at 59 E. Market St., will give York College two strong footholds
in the city. The former club building will serve as CCE's downtown office.
"Marketview Arts will allow the CCE to continue its
ongoing support of the cultural and artistic life of the York region,"
DelliCarpini said, adding that it will improve its partnership with the
Pennsylvania Arts Experience, the Cultural Alliance of York, Creative York and
the Strand-Capitol — all close to the building.
