Temple aims for $100M, 35K seat stadium for North Philly campus

Temple University wants to construct a 35,000 seat football stadium at a cost of $100 million on a corner of its North Philly campus.

The proposed stadium, which already has received several "seven-figure commitments for funding," will be part of the agenda at a December meeting of the Board of Trustees, according to a Philly.com report.

The potential stadium area is the site of Geasey Field, where the field hockey and women's lacrosse teams play. Those teams are slated to move to a new facility regardless of whether a football stadium is approved.

The football team, which now has a 7-0 record after defeating East Carolina University Thursday night, would not be the only reason for the stadium to bring in crowds, Temple's Board Chairman Patrick O'Connor told Philly.com.

"We want it for community events such as high school sporting events, along with concerts and academic purposes," he said.

The school does not want to use tuition dollars to fund the construction, according to the report, and has already received interest from several donors.
