Stockton University still seeking property in Atlantic City

An indoor pool, hot tub and free breakfast. Those are a few of the amenities Stockton University students living at the Clarion Inn on Route 30 enjoy as the South Jersey college leased the entire motel, according to a Press of Atlantic City report.

Stockton had planned to house students at the former Showboat, which it purchased last year before agreeing to sell it to Philly developer Bart Blatstein earlier this month. It would have provided up to 400 rooms for upperclassmen, the Press of AC said.

Blatstein, who already owns the former Pier Shops at Caesar's, paid $22 million for the shuttered casino.

School officials were happy to unload the property, which Stockton was unable to repurpose due to land-use covenants. However, it led the college to house students in several off-campus motels for another year as they continue to search for a more permanent solution.

The school's Interim President, Harvey Kesselman said:

...they are looking at several options that definitely include Atlantic City...
He said they are looking at options along Pomona and Jimmie Leeds roads, where housing could be built in a public/private partnership, but it would take several years to complete.

Go to the Press of Atlantic City for more details on how the NJ university is dealing with the student housing crunch.
