Janitors' union, building owners reach labor agreement

The union representing 2,800 janitors and building engineers who clean and maintain 168 buildings in the heart of Philadelphia's business district reached a tentative agreement Thursday night two hours before the workers' contract with the Building Operators Labor Relations (BOLR) division of the Building Owners and Management Association was set to expire, said the union and Robert Martin, BOLR president.

The four-year contract with Service Employees International Union Local 32BJ includes wage increases as well as enough contributions to keep workers' benefits intact, Martin said, adding that the union agreed to some changes in work rules.

Although the building owners association negotiated the agreement with the union, they don't generally employ the janitors. The janitors and building engineers work for cleaning contracting companies that agree to abide by the contract. The union expects to ratify the vote on Wednesday and Martin said BOLR will present the tentative agreement to building owners early next week.
