John Dougherty: Convention Center changes are working

Kudos to the Business Journal for writing about the PA Convention Center’s securing of Lightfair International in 2017. Along with the Papal visit and the 2016 Democratic National Convention, Lightfair is another big win for Philadelphia. Bringing this cutting-edge architectural and commercial lighting show – one of the largest in the world – back to Philadelphia is a major coup for our city’s vibrant hospitality industry.

Lightfair will bring 29,000 attendees, some 25,000 hotel nights, and nearly $50 million in economic development to the city. The turnaround at the Center has been remarkable and I want to personally thank the Convention Center Board of Directors, Center CEO John McNichol and his first-rate staff, and private facilities management firm SMG for having the skill, experience and conviction to make the changes that were needed to ensure that customer satisfaction is always the top priority. In fact, the hiring of a private management firm of SMG’s industry stature and expertise – a move I’d advocated for years - was every bit as important to the Center’s success as the new Customer Satisfaction Agreement. The Convention Center will never look back. The bright and prosperous future we’d all envisioned for the Center has arrived.
