Developer plans tower for vacant Rittenhouse lot

A building may finally be coming to a long-vacant Rittenhouse Square lot.

Southern Land Co., which has its headquarters in Nashville, is planning a residential tower at 1911 Walnut St., according to the company website, which says the future building will offer "state-of-the-art living, desirable shopping and delicious dining."

The lot just off Rittenhouse Square has sat vacant for years.

The Tennessee company closed on the site in February for a price reportedly in the range of $30 to $40 million.

The project will include both rental and condo units, several lower-levels of retail space, and underground parking, according to preliminary plans.

The Rittenhouse Square tower will be the second undertaking by Southern Land in Philadelphia. Its first is the recently opened 3601 Market, a 363-unit apartment building with retail space that is part of the University City Science Center's expanding West Philly campus. Much of the retail component of the University City property is already leased.
