Union rep says South Jersey A&P jobs are safe

More than 500 supermarket employees' jobs in Atlantic, Cape May and southern Ocean counties are safe, the president of a Mays Landing-based food workers union told the Press of Atlantic City.

The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. plans to lay off more than 8,500 workers in New Jersey, including 509 at four locations in those three South Jersey counties, as part of its plan to shutter hundreds of stores following its bankruptcy filing earlier this summer.

Acme is waiting on approval from the Federal Trade Commission to buy 76 of A&P's shuttered stores, including SuperFresh locations in Ocean City, North Wildwood and Manahawkin, and a Pathmark in Ventnor.

If the acquisition goes through Acme plans to keep many of the workers on the job, Brian String, presidnet of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union Local 152 told the Press of AC.

“Acme will take over these and we believe it will be a seamless transition. All our members will continue to work,” he said Monday. Acme spokeswoman Danielle D’Elia said Acme plans to hire substantially all of the A&P employees from stores it acquires.

A&P, which previously sought buyers for just some of its locations, changed course last week. It now wants buyers for all of its remaining stores.
