Target Corp. plans to open a 19,000-square-foot store at
in the Washington Square neighborhood of Philadelphia.
The company said the retail outlet will open July 2016 in
a mixed-use project that Brickstone Cos. is constructing at 12th and Chestnut
streets and will join a similar store it plans to also open at the same time at
19th and Chestnut streets in the Rittenhouse Square neighborhood.
The two stores will be what the company calls a “flexible
format Target,” which has a smaller footprint than its typical store and looks
to fit into the neighborhoods in which they are located.
It initially labeled these stores, many of which are in
urban areas, as City Target and Target Express, but now the company plans to
simply call them Target and re-brand existing ones with its trademark bulls
eye.
“...Big or small, our stores have one thing in common:
They’re all Target,” the company wrote in a blog post. “Guests can walk into a
Target store of any shape or size and find great merchandise, helpful team
members, clean, bright aisles and incredible value.”
The 12th and Chestnut streets store joins several other
projects set to revitalize the East Market district.
A 17-story mixed-use tower is currently under
construction at 11th and Market streets and the Gallery mall, which stretches
along Market Street from 9th to 12th streets, is undergoing a $325 million
redevelopment.
