The South Middleton Township supervisors are expected to
consider and possibly vote on a series of conditions Thursday night that will
be attached to the recently approved conditional use permit for a
2-million-square-foot warehouse proposed by logistics property company Goodman
Birtcher, township Supervisor Tom Faley said Thursday.
The proposed logistics center, which is located off of
Allen Road and straddles Dickinson Township, the Borough of Carlisle, and South
Middleton Township, has faced local opposition throughout the approval process.
Attorneys for Goodman Birtcher and local attorney Nathan
Wolf, who has acted on behalf of warehouse opponents, together developed most
of the conditions, Faley said. That should improve the odds of winning approval
from supervisors.
“Working together – that’s an unusual situation,” he
said. “I’m glad it’s working out this way.”
Faley said he would not be certain of the details of the
proposed conditions until they are presented at tonight’s meeting, which will
be held at 6 p.m. at the South Middleton Township Municipal Building at 520
Park Drive.
The supervisors unanimously approved the conditional use
plan at a June 11 meeting with the understanding that conditions were still to
be determined. Goodman Birtcher must still create a preliminary land
development plan and a final land development plan before the township’s
planning process will be complete, Faley said.
“(The conditional use plan) is only the first door, but
it’s a big door,” he said.
The land on which Goodman Birtcher plans to build in
South Middleton Township is already zoned for industrial use, unlike its land
in Dickinson Township, for which the company received a zoning change after a
series of contentious meetings.
Goodman Birtcher has said the logistics center will
ultimately create 900 jobs, 80 percent of which will be permanent.
