A strike by Bricklayers Union Local No. 1 is bringing
multiple projects in the St. Louis area to a halt — including City Walk and the
construction of a Whole Foods in the Central West End.
The strike began June 1 when the existing collective
bargaining agreement with the Mason Contractors Association expired.
An MCA official said an ongoing pension dispute that is
tied up in the court system is central to the disagreement.
Picket lines began June 1 at association job sites where
brick work is underway. Union officials previously said that contractors who are
not members of the Mason Contractors Association already have signed new
contracts with Bricklayers Local 1, and work will continue at their job sites.
Union officials said the Mason Contractors Association
was offered essentially the same terms as those offered to independent
contractors who are not association members, but the association has refused
the offer.
Among the projects halted by the strike are:
Project SOTA — a 300,000-square-foot manufacturing
facility for SKF, a global manufacturer of lubrication components.
- Jefferson Barracks
- County Court
- Football arena at Missouri Baptist University
- Shrewsbury Wal-Mart
- Ralls Elementary School
- Wal-Mart Neighborhood Markets
- A retail project in Pagedale involving a movie theater, retail shops and health care services.
- City Walk
- Whole Foods at City Walk
- The Ranken Technical College Rodneheiser addition
Members of Bricklayers Local 1 — including bricklayers,
tuck pointers, caulkers and cleaners — are employed by 95 local companies, of
which 42 are covered by a single agreement with Mason Contractors Association
and 53 are independent contractors that have similar basic agreements, union
officials said.
