Arbitrator To Try And Resolve Franklin Lakes Police Labor Dispute: Policemen's Benevolent Association Local 150 'absolutely' wanted to avoid arbitration.

The police union and the borough will head to arbitration, something police personnel “absolutely” wanted to avoid, after the union members have been working without a contract for six months.

The borough filed for arbitration Thursday with the state’s Public Employment Relations Commission, NorthJersey.com reported, because Mayor Frank Bivona said it had ”exhausted its efforts to negotiate a deal” with the police, the report states.

The Policemen’s Benevolent Association Local 150, which represents 19 Franklin Lakes officers, had wanted to avoid arbitration and try and work out the dispute directly with the Borough Council.

According to the report, Police Department salaries and wages account for $2.6 million of the borough’s $16.7 million budget this year.

The previous contract expired Dec. 31.
