A medical school is under consideration for Atlantic City
as a newly funded redevelopment corporation will explore it as an option for
underused sections of the Shore resort.
The Casino Reinvestment Development Authority approved
$2.5 million in funding for the Atlantic City Development Corp., a private firm
that aims to overhaul the city's downtown and help renew its economy as the
casino and tourism industries wane, the Press of Atlantic City reported.
Mayor Don Guardian, who sits on the CRDA’s board, said
the Atlantic City Development Corp., or AC Devco, will explore building a
medical school in partnership with health care provider AtlantiCare and Rowan
University, as well as a corporate office building for South Jersey Industries,
the parent company of South Jersey Gas.
A medical school would fit in with the CRDA’s long-sought
“Eds and Meds” strategy — short for education and medical — to redevelop
sections of the city’s Tourism District.
Guardian, stressing that plans are preliminary at this
stage, said architects will look at CRDA-owned property bordered by Pacific,
Atlantic, Ohio and Indiana avenues as a possible site for a medical school. The
land is directly across the street from AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center on
Ohio.
Rowan and AtlantiCare representatives confirmed
development projects are being discussed, but they did not disclose specifics,
according to the Press of Atlantic City.
