The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission said Friday that
construction will soon begin on plans to build and widen the roadway from four
to six lanes between the Susquehanna River bridge and the Harrisburg West
interchange at a cost of $94 million.
The project will include a 26-foot center median, and
construction will begin after Memorial Day, PennDOT said in a news release. It
will span 3 miles, from mile marker 242 to mile marker 245.
The project is expected to be completed by spring 2018.
The $83.5 million construction was awarded to
Pittsburgh-based Trumbull Corp. and Mechanicsburg-based Erdman Anthony
Associates Inc. is providing construction management and inspection services
for $6.5 million, spokesman Carl DeFabo said.
Two lanes of traffic will be maintained at “most times”
during the construction, PennDOT said.
The Turnpike Commission also announced an “Orange
Improvement Zone” campaign to better inform state residents about the status of
construction projects.
