The union representing employees of the Wyndham Garden
Trenton filed a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board last month
over changes in benefits and work assignments.
The union, which represents about 50 hotel employees, has
asked supporters to boycott the hotel for overnight stays and events amid the
contract dispute. The New Jersey AFL-CIO asked their thousands of members to
support the hotel union's boycott earlier this week.
The labor complaint alleges that the Welcome Hotel Group,
which purchased the hotel at auction from the city of Trenton in 2013, stopped
paying for employee health insurance and paid time off, and increased work
assignments beyond normal duties, said Ben Begleiter, a spokesman for the
union.
Begleiter said the union, which represents about 50
employees at the hotel, was in the midst of negotiations with the hotel owners
when talks broke down.
"After negotiating for about a year for a contract,
the employer walked away from the table and then started making changes to the
terms and conditions of the work," Begleiter said.
The hotel owners said they are still trying to reach an
agreement with the union.
"We never signed a contract with the union,"
said Mashkoor "Mohammed" Ahmad, a financial adviser and partner of
the owners.
Ahmad said the owners are having an attorney review the
proposals from the union representatives before approving any contract or
proposing changes.
Deepak Viswanath, one of the hotel owners, did not
respond to a request for comment sent via email.
Begleiter said the hotel union members have not taken a
vote to go on strike at this time.
