PHEAA demolishing six-story Harrisburg office building for additional parking

The Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency, a national provider of student financial aid services, will soon be getting more parking for its Harrisburg employees.

Last fall, PHEAA purchased 1401 N. Seventh St., a six-story office building, for $3.5 million, according to Dauphin County property records.

The agency is using about 160 parking spaces at that building while it demolishes the structure.

Internal demolition is going on now. PHEAA still needs to bid the external demolition, said Keith New, an agency spokesman.

"We expect it to take place in late summer," he said of that work.

Once that is completed, PHEAA will have a 229-space surface lot at that site for its employees. PHEAA's headquarters is at 1200 N. Seventh St.

The agency has 1,516 parking spaces at its headquarters. It leases another 166 nearby spaces, New said. It will have access to more than 1,900 spaces when the parking project wraps up.

PHEAA has about 3,500 employees. About 2,300 are based in Harrisburg.

"We operate different shifts. It's always a challenge in the parking garage," New said.
