Camden observation tower hangs in limbo

A 300-foot observation tower overlooking the Camden, N.J., waterfront was supposed to be South Jersey's newest landmark — but it's currently hanging in limbo.

The Skyview Tower, the 12,500-square-foot ride that would carry people 300 feet above the ground via open-air gondolas, was announced almost two years ago with an expected debut date of 2015, but its actual opening date remains unknown.

Calls to Herschend Family Entertainment, the parent company of Adventure Aquarium, and Camden's economic development organization Cooper's Ferry Partnership were directed to Adventure Aquarium.

"At this time, the Skyview Tower remains in the development stage. Additional planning and engineering work are necessary," said spokeswoman Corrinne Kluge. "Contributing to the ongoing enhancement of the Camden Waterfront is at the forefront of our vision."

She said new information on the tower will be provided as it becomes available.

The $5 million, privately funded attraction is set to be located near Adventure Aquarium close to Ulysses S. Wiggins Park.

The design and construction are by London-based Tower Systems, according to Hidden City Philadelphia.

Philadelphia will be getting its own observation deck at One Liberty Place aimed at expanding the city's tourism industry. It will be operated by Montparnasse 56 Group, a Paris-based company with a division based in New York.
