Bethlehem Planning Commission on Thursday approved an
additional 116 units to be added to Kirkland Village in Bethlehem, an
independent-living and skilled nursing facility on Madison Avenue.
The complex currently has 158 independent-living
apartments, 60 nursing home beds and 33 personal care/assisted living suites.
Eighty-four of the new units will be age-restricted, independent-living
apartments, while the other 32 beds will be within a skilled nursing facility.
“The first phase of the project will be two ‘terrace
homes,’ which will add 42 additional units,” said Samantha Roos-Meiser,
executive director of Kirkland Village. Each terrace home will consist of 21
units.
Kirkland Village doesn’t have a timeline for the rest of
the project, which will be completed in four phases.
Kirkland bought land early last year from the adjacent
First Presbyterian Church of Bethlehem to provide for the expansion.
“We had done a market analysis that showed the need for
additional living units,” said Roos-Meiser, who declined to disclose the cost
of the expansion.
A groundbreaking for construction is set to begin in May,
with plans to start occupying the new units in July 2016, she said.
Benchmark Construction Inc. of Ephrata is
the general contractor for the project. RLPS Architects of Lancaster is
the design firm.
