644 W. Cumberland Street is just one of many vacant
homes highlighted by City Controller Alan Butkovitz as dangerous.

Just over 100 vacant properties in Philadelphia have been
labeled as dangerous, unsafe and with structural issues, according to an
analysis of a Dept. of Licenses & Inspections database conducted by the
city controller's office.
L&I's records showed that these properties also had
outstanding violations, according to a statement released by Alan Butkovitz,
city controller. The properties that were evaluated were privately owned.
In addition to reviewing the L&I database, the
controller's office said it did visual inspections on 20 properties and found
them mired with problems including: collapsing roofs, failing support walls
that were falling onto adjacent properties and broken windows. Another 20 were
evaluated that were found to be in more dangerous condition.
L&I inspectors were made aware of the controller's
findings and action was taken by the agency to stabilize those properties that
presented imminent danger. The controller recommended demolition of some
properties.
Butkovitz's office said that the homes should be monitored.
The controller also suggested that other steps should be taken to have the
properties redeveloped and the city should explore fining property owners for
violations.
