Just a day before legislators are officially sworn in for
the 2015-2015 legislative session, Speaker-designate Mike Turzai (R-Allegheny)
announced the chairmen of the various legislative committees.
Notable changes from last session include former House
Majority Whip Stan Saylor (R-York) helming the House Education Committee
following the retirement of former chairman Rep. Paul Clymer (R-Bucks).
Rep. Bernie O’Neill (R-Bucks) takes over for Rep. Kerry
Benninghoff (R-Centre) as Republican chair of House Finance after Rep.
Benninghoff was elected to Republican leadership. Rep. Jake Wheatley
(D-Allegheny) takes over for the retired Rep. Phyllis Mundy (D-Luzerne) on the
same committee.
Pennsylvania’s two largest industries also have new House
chairmen.
Agriculture is Pennsylvania’s largest industry and the
Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee will be helmed by Rep. Martin Causer
(R-McKean) and Rep. John Sabatina (D-Philadelphia) in the coming session.
Last session the committee was helmed by Rep. John Maher
(R-Allegheny) and Rep. Joe Petrarca (D-Westmoreland), both of whom have moved
on to chair other committees this session.
Tourism is Pennsylvania’s second largest industry and the
House Tourism and Recreational Development Committee will have a new Republican
chairman in Rep. Dave Hickernell (R-Lancaster) who replaces the retired Rep.
Jerry Stern (R-Blair). Democrat Thaddeus Kirkland (D-Chester) remains the
minority chairman of the committee.
The appointment of chairmen does not become effective
until they are read on the House floor, which will likely take place on the
first session day of the new session, January 6.
