Delco teachers to rally for contract talks

MEDIA Rose Tree Media teachers plan to march from an elementary school to the Media courthouse on Thursday for a rally to protest the lack of progress on a new contract for 330 union members.

The current contract expired at the end of August, and negotiations have stalled over healthcare costs. The district has proposed a high deductible plan that would reduce the cost of medical coverage by $700,000, it said on its website. The union's proposal would reduce health care costs by $40,000, the district said.

The union maintains the district is using an antiquated model of healthcare and could save money by joining the Delaware County Healthcare Consortium, now in it's second year and with 10 other districts as members.

The march will be begin at 3:30 p.m. outside Media Elementary School at Front and Monroe Streets. About 100 to 200 teachers and other staffers are expected to attended. The marchers are scheduled to arrive at the courthouse on Front Street at 4 p.m. for an hour-long rally, at which local and state union leaders are expected to speak.
