Blatstein withdraws appeal of Gaming Control Board's decision

Developer Bart Blatstein, who planned a casino complex on North Broad Street at the site of the former Inquirer building, said he has withdrawn his appeal of the decision that gave the casino license to another bidder.

Blatstein's proposal included a casino but also a hotel and other pieces in a three-block-deep complex named The Provence and fronted at 400 N. Broad St.

In a statement, Blatstein and Tower Entertainment, said it "has made the decision to withdraw its appeal of the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board's issuance of the Category 2 gaming license to Philly Live."

Live! Hotel and Casino, which plans to develop a site near the stadium complex in South Philadelphia, was the winning bidder when the board announced the results in November.

Live! will be built and owned by a partnership of Baltimore-based Cordish companies and Greenwood Racing Inc.

The Tower Entertainment statement concludes:

"It's unfortunate that the Gaming Board passed on a transformational, game-changing development in The Provence and instead settled for another dumbed-down, slots-in-a-box project in a land-locked, congested location with zero potential for economic development spin-off."
