Workers place roof on Camelback Indoor Waterpark

Camelback Lodge & Aquatopia Indoor Waterpark in Tannersville has entered a new phase of construction as it nears completion on a nearly 53,000-square-foot Texlon transparent roof placement.

At 125,000 square feet, Camelback Mountain Resort’s indoor waterpark is part of a $163 million construction project scheduled to finish in March.

The roof placement is about 90 percent complete, said Chris Hewison, project executive for Camelback and Aquatic Development Group, the waterpark designer based in Cohoes, New York State.

The Texlon roof lets in natural sunlight to allow for year-round tanning inside Aquatopia, which will maintain an indoor air temperature of 84 degrees throughout the year.

“We’ll sell suntan lotion at the front desk because you can get a tan even in the winter,” Hewison said today. “The installation takes about 12 weeks and we are just wrapping up the final pieces right now.”

The waterpark will include seven pools, 13 waterslides, and several water attractions including a massive wave pool, lazy river and surfing simulator, as well as a gravity-defying water coaster and a family raft ride that combines three waterslide experiences into one slide.

Hewison said construction workers are starting to build all of the water features inside the waterpark, including preparing the waterfalls and getting ready for landscaping and ordering the tropical plants.

Workers are starting to install some slides and put up all the steel for the other slides, Hewison said.

Construction will also start soon on a next generation play structure that will include different features that go along with the explorer theme of the waterpark.

Venus Slydetrap, one of the 13 slides, will start to go up in January, Hewison said.

Aside from Aquatopia, the interconnected facility will include Arcadia, an indoor game space; and an eight-story, 453-suite hotel with 24 room styles plus one-, two- and three-bedroom condo units, several restaurants, a 20,000-square-foot flexible conference/meeting center, a 10,000-square-foot spa and several retail spaces.

The lodge and waterpark facility is under construction at the base of Camelback Mountain.

Wisconsin-based Horizon Construction Group is the construction manager.

Architectural Design Consultants Inc. of Wisconsin Dells, Wis., was the architect for the lodge.

Since buying Camelback Mountain Resort in 2005, co-owners Ken Ellis and Arthur Berry III have been making investments in the property.
