Trump Entertainment Resorts has threatened to close the
Trump Taj Mahal casino in Atlantic City, N.J., on Dec. 12, according to the
Associated Press. The issue is a union appeal of a bankruptcy court ruling that
canceled the pension and health care plans for workers. If the union continues,
management says it will close.
A closure of the casino would leave more than 3,000
people out of work. With recent closures at Revel, Showboat and Trump Plaza,
roughly 6,100 have lost their jobs.
Roger Gros, publisher of Global Gaming Business, said in
October that the termination of the Taj Mahal union contract could be a boost
to the remaining Atlantic City casinos.
"It's great news for the city and employees. The
unions are trying to behave like nothing has changed from seven years ago when
the city was at the top of its game," said Gros. "They were trying to
make believe that [they could] be continued to be paid the same even though
casinos are making half of the money."
