Union defends trying to dissuade Taj Mahal patrons

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) - The union battling Atlantic City's Trump Taj Mahal is defending its right to contact the casino's customers and urge them to take their business elsewhere during a nasty labor dispute.

Local 54 of the Unite-HERE union told a federal bankruptcy judge Wednesday that Trump Entertainment Resorts cannot stop it from contacting customers, letting them know about the labor dispute and urging them to go elsewhere.

Last week the judge let the company cancel the union contract, ending health insurance and pensions for workers.

Trump Entertainment is threatening to close the casino on Nov. 13 unless it gets $175 million in state aid - which New Jersey's state senate president has already ruled out.

The union is warning customers of further labor unrest; picketing there is set for Friday.
