Two midstate transportation projects are included in a
dozen throughout Pennsylvania receiving $19.2 million in state money from the
Governor's Transportation Infrastructure and Investment Fund aimed at fostering
economic development and job creation.
“Strong transportation infrastructure is the centerpiece
of a strong economy,” said Barry J. Schoch, secretary of the state Department
of Transportation. “These projects were selected specifically for the benefits
that they’ll bring to local economies throughout the state.”
A project to upgrade Fairfield Road, which is Route 116,
and Iron Springs Road in Hamiltonban Township, Adams County, is receiving
$700,000 for increased vehicular traffic expected with the construction of a
new commercial shopping center at Iron Springs Plaza, according to a news
release from Gov. Tom Corbett’s office.
MFS Inc., South Annville Township, Lebanon County, is
receiving $460,000 to expand and realign Killinger Road and Clear Spring Road
at Benjamin Franklin Highway, which is Route 422, according to the release.
Also, the money will go toward the installation of a traffic signal. MFS is
controlled by commercial developer Eastern Land and Resources Co., 1025 W. Main
St., Annville.
Money from the fund is given out for transportation
infrastructure related economic development projects and is separate from the
$2.3 billion to $2.4 billion set aside for transportation in Act 89. All of the
projects statewide will enhance safety, assist with local economic development
efforts and support more than 5,000 jobs, according to the release.
