The Bethlehem Parking Authority has received three bids
from developers interested in building a parking garage atop the authority's
East Broad Street lot.
The authority plans to open the bids at 2:30 p.m.
Wednesday, but they won't be made public until one is selected, Executive
Director Kevin Livingston said. The submission deadline was Tuesday.
The authority had been seeking a $1.23 million minimum
purchase price for its parking lot at East Broad and Long streets, or a
comparable lease, according to its request for proposal. The authority is
looking for an estimated 400 parking spots at minimum, though a future parking
study will determine an official amount, the request says.
The garage also must include retail, commercial and/or
office space and the developer also must be willing to lease the garage to the
authority for at least 50 years.
Bethlehem Mayor Bob Donchez has said the city may use the
garage as a replacement for the authority's 777-spot Walnut Street garage,
which needs an estimated $8 million worth of repairs.
Livingston said the authority had expected more than
three bids for the garage project. He said the authority board will evaluate
the proposals and will likely want to interview the companies before making a
selection, which probably won't happen until November at the earliest.
