As one of Monroe County's oldest and largest employers,
Pocono Medical Center announced plans to build its second hospital campus.
Pocono Medical Center West will sit on a 40-acre site
that once was the Summit Resort, at Route 715 and Interstate 80 in
Tannersville, Pocono Township.
“Pocono Medical Center West will allow us to bring the
most sophisticated health care technology and the highest quality care to an
expanding number of patients here in Monroe County,” said Jeff Snyder, PMC’s
president and CEO.
To buy the land, PMC signed a letter of understanding
with the Farda family, which operated the resort for decades, and DF Pocono
Associates LP. When the transaction is final, PMC will take ownership of the
land.
Plans for the size, scope and staff at the new campus are
being finalized, but hospital officials said construction is expected to begin
in about 18 months.
“For the next several months, we will be working on the
due diligence phase on the land,” PMC’s Geoffrey Roche said this morning,
“while simultaneously evaluating a feasibility assessment to determine the
appropriate services and size for our new Pocono Medical Center West campus.”
Founded in East Stroudsburg in 1915, Pocono Medical
Center has more than 200 physicians and 1,850 staff members.
“It [PMC West] is most certainly going to include new
jobs,” said Roche, PMC’s director, community/government relations.
In the past seven years, PMC has enhanced and added to
inpatient and outpatient clinical services at its main campus and more than 20
other locations. Monroe’s population has about doubled in the past
quarter-century, with much of the growth in the western part of the county.
“Today, with these investments in key clinical services
in place, it’s time to focus on enhancing our physical plant,” Snyder said. “By
expanding our services to the primary areas of population growth in Monroe
County.”
