Abington Health, Jefferson to sign letter of intent to merge

Thomas Jefferson University, Jefferson Health System and Abington Health will sign a letter of intent to merge — which would create the region's largest health system based on bed count.

Officials at the two organizations, in a statement released Wednesday, said: "During the last 30 days, leaders at Jefferson and Abington Health have conducted a period of focused, intensive study evaluating a model that will combine the two organizations for the benefit of patient care, wellness and health and medical education in the region."

Wednesday's signing of the letter of intent is the next step in the process of merging the two organizations in 2015. The two health systems first said they were exploring a partnership last month. Officials from Jefferson and Abington are expected to provide more details about the proposal merger later today.

The combined entity would have five hospitals and a geographically disperse network of ambulatory-care centers in southeastern Pennsylvania and South Jersey. Those health centers last year collectively handled more than 84,000 hospital admissions, 1.1 million outpatient visits and nearly 249,000 emergency room visits.

Jefferson is the parent company for Thomas Jefferson University Hospital , Methodist Hospital , Jefferson Hospital for Neuroscience— all in Philadelphia. It also includes Thomas Jefferson University and its Sidney Kimmel Medical College.

Abington Health is the parent for Abington Memorial Hospital in Abington, Pa., and Lansdale Hospital in Hatfield Township, Pa. — both in Montgomery County.

The two health systems, combined, currently have more than 13,000 employees.
