Officials to break ground on The Promenade; luxury apartments, retail stores to rise at former Acme site in Newtown Township

NEWTOWN TOWNSHIP - Promenade management partners, headed by Jim Worthington of Newtown, will officially break ground on the Promenade project Thursday afternoon, Sept. 4, kicking off construction at the former Acme site at Sycamore Street and Jefferson Avenue.

Project partner Jim Worthington, Newtown Township Supervisor Mike Gallagher and construction manager Vince Keenan will join community officials in ceremoniously putting a shovel to the ground.

The Promenade – a two building complex – will include the development of 26 luxury apartments and four to six retails establishments consisting of high end retailers and anchored by retail giant Anthropologie.

The project represents another step forward in fulfilling the township’s vision of Sycamore Street as a walkable, downtown district.

“We set out a couple of years ago to get rid of the eyesores in town, get rid of the abandoned and underutilized buildings and turn Sycamore Street into a walkable community,” said Gallagher. “We’ve made some great strides and I think the next year is going to be exciting to see the difference between 2013 and 2014. It’s going to be absolutely mind-blowing how different the town will look.”

In addition to the Promenade, construction projects are moving forward at Sycamore Street and Richboro Road - the former Stockburger Chrysler showroom site - where a new Beneficial Bank is taking shape, and on Swamp Road, just a few hundred feet off Sycamore, where Univest is building its new financial center.
