Lancaster County will need about 14,600 new workers in
manufacturing over the next decade to replace retiring baby boomers, according
to a projection released today by the Lancaster County Workforce Investment
Board.
That's on top of a projected need for 2,200 manufacturing
workers because of growth in the industry, according to a news release.
To raise awareness of the issue's importance, a number of
partners joined the WIB this morning to kick off what has been dubbed
"Making It in Lancaster County: A Week-Long Focus on Manufacturing
Workforce Development."
Manufacturing accounts for 42 percent of all exports from
the county, 18 percent of gross regional product and 13 percent of the total
workforce, with the county's manufacturing sales totaling $13.7 billion,
according to a news release.
Co-sponsors for the week's events are the Lancaster
Society for Human Resource Management, Economic Development Company of
Lancaster County, Mantec, Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology, Lancaster
County Career & Technology Center, Harrisburg Area Community College, the County
of Lancaster and the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce & Industry.
The group has scheduled daily events ranging from issues
briefings to open houses; details are available here.
