Lancaster awarded $500K for new public works facility

The City of Lancaster has been awarded a $500,000 grant to support the construction of a new public works facility and will sell one of its existing maintenance sites to the Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology, Gov. Tom Corbett announced this afternoon.

The Keystone Communities public improvement grant is from Pennsylvania's Department of Community and Economic Development and is intended to help the city consolidate property and lower costs, a news release said.

The city's new 35,000-square-foot facility will be built on a 12.9-acre site at Grofftown Road, East Walnut Street and the Conestoga River, the release said. Equipment, fleet vehicles and personnel currently housed in three public works locations will be consolidated there.

Lancaster Mayor Rick Gray said in the release that the new facility will be "safe and energy-efficient" and that “most importantly, lower maintenance costs and centralized services will save taxpayer dollars and improve customer service."

The former maintenance facility will be used as a learning facility for TSCT, according to the release. No further details of the plan were released.
