Harrisburg International Airport is in the final stages
of completing a master plan that will guide airport development over the next
20 years.
The current master plan was published more than 10 years
ago.
“Aviation is a dynamic industry, requiring regular
reevaluation," HIA Executive Director Tim Edwards said in a news release.
"By undertaking the new study, HIA is preparing for the future."
Two overarching issues that the new master plan will
address are future airport requirements in relation to changing demands, and
emerging technical issues, the release said.
Planners from Leigh Fisher of Burlingame, Calif., are
working to complete the master plan study. Work began in fall 2013 with data
collection and an inventory of existing airport facilities.
Future aviation demand was forecast, and future facility
requirements were projected by comparing existing facilities with forecast
demand. Leigh Fisher is now developing alternative plans and projects that
could meet the future needs of the airport, the release said.
To assist in guiding the master planning efforts, the
airport has established a master plan advisory committee composed of
stakeholders from airport tenants, local aviation businesses, various
government agencies, local municipalities and the Pennsylvania Air National
Guard.
The committee will meet five times during development of
the master plan to review progress and provide input to the plan.
The airport hosted a public workshop in June and will
host a second public meeting from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Penn State
Harrisburg campus in the Capital Union Building.
Various plans and displays will be available for public
view. Airport officials and the Leigh Fisher master planners will be available
to discuss the proposed plans or answer questions.
“HIA welcomes public participation in the master planning
process, and we hope to see a strong turnout from the public,” Edwards said.
Parking for the meeting is free.
