Construction Employment Hits 5-Year High, Industry Adds 20,000 Jobs In August



Employment in the construction industry continued to grow with 20,000 jobs added in August. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the unemployment rate for the construction industry was at 7.7 percent in August.  The unemployment rate is slightly higher than the 7.5 percent reported in July, but is the lowest rate for the month of August in seven years.


The construction industry has added 232,000 jobs over the last 12 months with 192,000 of those jobs being added in 2014. Construction employment was at 6,068,000 jobs in August and is the highest it’s been since the 6,100,000 jobs reported in May 2009.

All sectors in the construction industry saw job gains in August with specialty trade contractors adding 11,500 jobs in August. The construction industry has averaged 24,000 jobs added each month in 2014.
