City authority to seek developer for former Kline Building

The Allentown Commercial and Industrial Development Authority is hoping to find a developer to redevelop the former Kline Building site at Front and Hamilton streets in the city.

The authority’s board of directors has authorized executive director Scott Unger to prepare a request for proposals for the property. He expects to have one prepared in the next month or two when the authority will then begin accepting bids.

The building is vacant and is owned by ACIDA. He said the building is not usable in its existing state and the site would require extensive renovation.

“With some of the Waterfront development going on up north of the property, the timing seemed right for an RFP,” Unger said this morning. This summer, work began along the Lehigh River on the Waterfront, a $300 million development featuring office space, restaurant and retail, residential and public walking trails and an outdoor plaza and parking deck.

Formerly used by the A&B Meat Packing Co., the Kline Building has been vacant for decades.

Unger said he expects the RFP process will be similar to what the authority used for the former Colonial Theater, Neuweiler Brewery and Schoen’s Building properties in Allentown.
