Pennsylvania's unemployment rate rose slightly in July,
going up from 5.6 in June to 5.7 percent.
It’s the first rise in the rate in more than two years,
according to the state’s Department of Labor and Industry, but it is still
below the national rate of 6.2 percent.
Unemployment rose for the first time since August 2012, as
400 more people were looking for work than in June.
Overall, employment has risen 40,000 in the last 12 months,
and by 21,000 in 2014.
Total nonfarm jobs dipped by 700 in June to 5,793,000. The
largest gain was in the construction industry, which added 3,500 jobs, while
the leisure and hospitality industry lost the most at 4,400 jobs.
For the last 12 months, nonfarm jobs in Pennsylvania were up
just short of 1 percent, adding 54,100 jobs. According to the state, the gains
were almost entirely in private industries, with construction and trade,
transportation and utilities seeing the biggest gains.
