LOWER MERION Lower Merion School District officials are
considering expanding its existing bus parking lot after efforts to find a
bigger facility have been opposed by neighbors and community groups.
Pat Guinnane, the district's director of operations,
recently told school board members that the plan calls for constructing a
parking deck for up to 20 more buses at a garage on Matsonford Road. There are
70 buses at the site now.
Twenty-four more buses are parked at Lower Merion High
School, but space is needed there to accommodate growing enrollment, school
officials say.
Neighbors shot down a proposal to park buses at a site on
Bala Avenue. The board approved contracts with two consulting firms for
$102,500 for a study of the new plan.
Acting Superintendent Wagner Marseille has said the
district's enrollment could hit 8,000 this year for the first time since 1975.
