The second quarter was not a good one for commercial
construction bidding in Central Pennsylvania.
According to Chicago-based project data firm BidClerk,
construction bid releases in Lancaster County were down 41.2 percent in the
quarter — the lowest of the four local metropolitan areas — compared to 2013’s
first quarter. Bid releases totaled more than $50 million.
In Harrisburg-Carlisle, bidding was down 32.6 percent, with
bid releases totaling more than $270 million, according to BidClerk.
One high-profile release was the new Middletown Area High
School. The estimated value is $32.9 million.
Dillsburg-based eciConstruction LLC is the general
contractor on that project. Crabtree Rohrbaugh & Associates Inc., based in
Upper Allen Township, is the architect.
Lebanon County bidding was down 18.4 percent to just over
$30 million, while York-Hanover was flat with bids over $50 million, according
to BidClerk.
Overall, Pennsylvania’s major metro regions saw more than
1,600 construction projects released for bid in the second quarter, with a
total contract value of $3.3 billion. That was down from $3.5 billion in the
first quarter.
For the Philadelphia area, more than 800 projects were
released for bid, totaling $1.9 billion, according to BidClerk. In
Pittsburgh, more than 400 projects were
put out for bid, with a total value of nearly $800 million.
Nationally, BidClerk reported on $126 billion in commercial
construction contracts out to bid in the second quarter, which was up more than
$14 billion compared to last year’s second quarter.
